Goodbye to An Old Oak

An update from Senior Gardener Pete Putnicki

Over the past two years, we have seen the rapid decline of the health of the large Quercus myrsinifolia (bamboo-leaf oak) in the northwest corner or the Garden. In conjunction with the Parks Arboriculturist and UWBG Arboretum staff, we have determined that the tree will need to be removed.

We hope that timely removal of this tree will allow remaining specimens to re-establish canopy as quickly as possible. Our plan is to remove the bulk of the branch structure, while retaining the trunk. This will protect the root zone of the remaining trees and create a potential habitat for wildlife.

At this time, we are not sure of the exact cause of this trees failure, but will be conducting thorough tests of soil and tissue to determine what, if any, steps should be taken to protect the rest of the collection.

We also hope to re-purpose the timber from this tree so it can continue to live on in our Garden.

We are saddened by the loss of this magnificent specimen, but ultimately recognize that gardens are dynamic spaces, and hope to use this opportunity for growth and development.

The removal is scheduled for Monday, April 25th. It should in no way impact operations or visitation of the Garden.
