Northwest Nikkei by Michelle Kumata celebrates the Seattle Japanese Garden and our local Nikkei community of 1960, the year the garden officially opened to the public.
This exhibit was originally scheduled to open in May, 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.
Michelle Kumata is influenced by heritage, identity and legacy. She is currently exploring the Japanese diaspora in the U.S. and Brazil through oral histories and visual storytelling. This exhibit, Northwest Nikkei, celebrates the Seattle Japanese Garden and our local Nikkei community of 1960, the year the garden officially opened to the public.
Michelle Kumata is an artist and Seattle native with a BFA in Illustration from The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. She worked as a graphic artist at The Seattle Times for over a decade. She also served as Exhibit Director at Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience for 12 years. Her work has been shown at Center on Contemporary Art, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Asia Pacific Cultural Center, and The Society of Illustrators Museum, New York, NY. Her work is in the collections of the Seattle City Light Civic Art Collection, Asian Counseling and Referral Service, Facebook, and the Library of Congress.
