4/3 – Free First Thursday: History of Tea Ceremony

Akiko Suzuki from Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association will deliver a lecture on the Japanese tea ceremony on April 3rd. Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association has been demonstrating the Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Shoseian for many years. Attendees are invited to learn about the essence of the Japanese Traditional Tea Ceremony from historical and philosophical viewpoints.

*This lecture will be held in the community room, and traditional matcha tea will not be served.

Chado Urasenke Tankokai Seattle Association is the Seattle chapter of Chado Urasenke Tankokai, which is the membership organization for the Urasenke Chado practitioners.
They are the non-profit organization serving the Chado Urasenke practitioners and those interested in Chado in the greater Seattle area.

Their mission is to promote better understanding and appreciation of the rich culture and spirits of Japan through the art of Chado, “the Way of Tea”, commonly known in English as “Japanese Tea Ceremony.”


Entry to the garden is free the whole day from noon to closing for Free First Thursday.

Final entry to the garden is 45 minutes before closing.

“Artisans of Edo” Japanese Prints & Garments from the Wiley Family Collection

Artisans of Edo is a part of hundreds of Japanese prints that were collected by the Wiley family in Japan at the end of WWII. The collection is a loan from the Wiley family in honor of their late father Bob Wiley and mother, Mary Ann Wiley. The exhibit will also include a collection of 100-year-old garments acquired by the Wiley family.

Artisans of Edo will be on display from August 1 through 31, 2024. The garden admission is free from Noon to closing on Thursday, August 1 for Free First Thursday.

Free First Thursday: 'Garden Images' by Stephen Okawa Exhibit Opening

Join us for the return of Free First Thursday at the Seattle Japanese Garden! A new exhibit Garden Images by Stephen Okawa will be on display in the Tateuchi Community Room.

Okawa’s Garden Images series, created in 2020 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Garden includes winter silhouettes of the Imperial Birch, a tree donated and planted by the Crown Princess of Japan for the opening of the Seattle Japanese Garden.

Admission to the garden is FREE all day for Free First Thursday. The exhibit will be on display in the Tateuchi Community Room through the end of June.

Higo 10 Cents Store, owned by the Murakami family and a social hub in Seattle’s Japantown, has a long and fascinating community and family history. Meet Me at Higo welcomes younger generations to connect with and explore what it means to be Japanese American. Today, Higo 10 Cents Store (or Higo Variety Store) is KOBO at Higo and is still located at 604 South Jackson in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District.

Northwest Nikkei by Michelle Kumata celebrates the Seattle Japanese Garden and our local Nikkei community of 1960, the year the garden officially opened to the public.

This exhibit was originally scheduled to open in May, 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.

Visit the Tateuchi Community Room during garden’s open hours andjJoin us for the opening reception of this special exhibit from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, 8/28. Northwest Nikkei will be on display through the end of October 2021.

Virtual exhibition of the works of Michelle Kumata features the highlights from her Northwest Nikkei collection, which celebrates the Seattle Japanese Garden and our local Nikkei community of 1960, the year the garden officially opened to the public.

This exhibit will be virtually displayed for the months of May & June 2020. In-garden exhibit is scheduled for fall of 2020, where the entire collection will be on display. Stay tuned for more information.
